Notifications you can actually act on, contactless payments, a mature app library, and the tightest link between watch and phone of anything in the category. The costs are the same ones the Apple Watch has always carried. It charges every night, which complicates sleep tracking more than Apple admits, and it is locked to iPhone: there is no Android version, so half the market cannot use it at all. The Forerunner line is built around one activity, and it shows in what the watch prioritises: pace, structured workouts, recovery time and training readiness, presented for someone following a plan rather than closing rings. This is the watch that got a great many people into running with structured training, and its owner record on Amazon UK reflects that. It is old, and that is the point: the platform is proven and the price has come down. The screen is memory-in-pixel rather than AMOLED, which is the compromise. It is dim indoors and unremarkable to look at, and it is also readable in direct sunlight and sips power, which is where the week-long battery comes from. For someone who wants GPS, pace, a training plan and a watch that does not need daily thought, nothing here is better value. It runs the same operating system and the same apps as the Series 11 above, and day to day the experience is close to identical. What it drops is the advanced sensor set the Series 11 carries. The Charge is the alternative to wearing a watch at all. It is a slim band, noticeably lighter than everything else here, and that is what makes it the most comfortable of these to sleep in, which matters, because sleep tracking only works on a device you actually wear to bed. Fitbit's strength has always been presenting health data in plain language rather than as training metrics, and since Google acquired the company the Charge has gained Maps and contactless payments. A Google Health membership is included, and it is worth checking what it costs when it renews. The lower owner rating reflects long-running complaints about app changes and subscription pushes rather than the hardware. It does less than the watches here, by design.

Check phone compatibility first

Apple Watch works with iPhone only. There is no Android app and pairing is impossible. Garmin, Fitbit and Amazfit all work with both iPhone and Android, though a few features on each are reduced on iPhone because of how iOS handles notifications from third-party watches. This single fact eliminates most of the shortlist for most buyers.

Battery life is the daily difference

An Apple Watch is charged every night. A Garmin runs for a week or more, and an Amazfit for a fortnight. If you want sleep tracking, a watch that needs nightly charging has to be charged at some other point in the day, and in practice that is the thing people give up on first.

Training data and smart features are different products

Garmin is built around training: recovery, load, pace and route navigation, with an app designed for athletes. Apple and Fitbit are built around everyday health and convenience: notifications, payments, activity rings. Both are good; they are answering different questions, and the gap between them is wider than the price suggests.

AMOLED or not is a real trade
