Check what the USB-C port actually carries

A portable monitor needs video and power. Some run on a single USB-C cable from a laptop, which is the ideal; others need a separate power supply, and some need USB-C for power plus HDMI for video. Before buying, check that your laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode — many budget laptops have USB-C for charging and data only, in which case you will need the HDMI connection and a separate power source.

One cable is the whole point, so count what is in the box

The reason to own one of these is that it sets up in thirty seconds on a hotel desk. That falls apart if the right cable is missing. Check the listing photographs for what is supplied: ideally USB-C to USB-C, a USB-C to HDMI or mini-HDMI lead, and a cover that doubles as a stand.

Resolution matters more here than on a desktop monitor
