Apple's advantage is not any single specification, it is how long the phone stays current. Apple supports its handsets with system and security updates for longer than any Android maker has yet demonstrated, and for a phone you intend to keep for four or five years that matters more than the chipset. The A18 has performance headroom well beyond what most people will use, and the camera is the most consistent here — not always the best single photograph, but the least likely to produce a bad one, and clearly ahead for video. It ranks first on support and consistency. It is also the most expensive handset here, and the 128GB base storage is tight for anyone who films much.

Pixel phones have always been about what happens after the shutter. Google's processing pulls detail out of low light and high-contrast scenes better than the hardware alone would suggest, and the Pro adds a telephoto lens to the pair on the standard model. The 16e is Apple's way of putting the current chip in a cheaper phone. It has the same A18 as the iPhone 16 at the top of this list, which means the same performance headroom and the same long support runway — the two things that determine how long a phone lasts. What it drops is the camera. A single 48MP rear camera replaces the dual array, so there is no ultra-wide, and that is a real limitation for landscapes and group shots. The A-series is Samsung's volume range and this is the sensible floor of the list: a 6.7-inch Full HD+ screen, 128GB of storage and dual-SIM support, for a fraction of what anything else here costs. How to choose a SIM-free phone in the UK

Work out the two-year cost, not the headline price

A contract folds the handset into the monthly bill, so it looks cheaper and usually is not. Add up 24 months of a contract tariff against the SIM-free price plus 24 months of a SIM-only tariff — SIM-only deals in the UK are highly competitive and the gap is often substantial. The SIM-free route also leaves you free to change network the moment a better tariff appears.

Software support is the specification that matters most

A phone stops being safe to use when it stops receiving security updates, not when it feels slow. Apple supports its handsets for many years, and Google and Samsung now publish long support commitments for their flagship lines — but budget handsets from every maker get considerably less. Check the stated support period, because it is the real measure of how long the phone will last.

More megapixels is not a better camera

Phone camera quality comes from sensor size, lens quality and the processing applied afterwards, not the pixel count. Google's strength has always been the processing; Apple's is consistency across stills and video. A budget phone claiming a very high megapixel figure is usually using a small sensor with heavy processing, and it will show in poor light.

Check the charger is not in the box

Apple, Samsung and Google all ship phones without a mains charger, supplying a cable only. If you do not already own a suitable USB-C charger, that is an additional purchase, and using an underpowered one will charge the phone slowly. Check the wattage the phone supports rather than buying the cheapest adapter.

Storage cannot be added on any of these

None of the phones here has a microSD slot; the storage you buy is permanent. Photographs and video fill a handset faster than most people expect, particularly at high resolutions.
