Bose's reputation in this category rests on two things, and the Ultra has both. The cancelling is the most aggressive on this list, and the fit is the least fatiguing over several hours: low clamping force, deep earcups, and weight distributed so the pair effectively disappears. Sony's 1000X line has set the reference point for wireless noise cancelling for several generations, and the XM5 is the model that made the redesign: a lighter, smoother build with the cancelling and call handling that made the series' reputation. The one thing to know before buying is that the XM5 does not fold. Earlier models in the line collapsed into a compact case; this one swivels flat into a larger one. For a desk-to-bag commute it is irrelevant, and for anyone packing light it is a genuine step back, which is the main reason its owner rating sits slightly below its siblings. Against the XM6 it gives up the folding design and the newer cancelling processor, and it costs considerably less. What remains is strong cancelling, a well-judged sound, good call quality and LDAC support for Android listeners.

The standard QuietComfort is the Ultra with the newest features removed, and usually a lower price, though the gap between the two moves a lot on Amazon UK; when it closes, the Ultra is the better buy. How to choose noise-cancelling headphones

Decide what noise you are cancelling

Active noise cancelling works best on constant low-frequency sound: aircraft cabins, train rumble, air conditioning, road noise. It does far less about speech, keyboards and sudden sounds, which is why an open-plan office is a harder problem than a flight. If your noise is people talking, the seal and the earcup matter more than the cancelling circuit.

Comfort beats specification on a long journey

Clamping force, earcup depth and weight decide whether a pair is wearable for four hours, and no amount of driver quality compensates. If you wear glasses, clamping force matters more still. Bose has built its reputation on this and it is a real difference rather than a marketing one.

Check how they behave with cancelling off

Some headphones sound noticeably worse, or hiss faintly, when you turn noise cancelling off, and some will not pass audio at all when the battery dies. If you want a pair that doubles as ordinary wired headphones, check that a cable is included and that passive use is supported.

Codecs only matter if both ends support them

LDAC, aptX and AAC are ways of sending audio over Bluetooth, and they only help when the phone and the headphones both support the same one. iPhones use AAC and do not support LDAC or aptX at all. It is not worth paying extra for a codec your phone cannot send.

Folding and a hard case decide whether they travel
