The S Pen being included is the whole argument. Handwriting and sketching change what a tablet is used for, and on the iPad above, the stylus is a separate and substantial purchase. Here it is in the box, and Samsung's pen needs no charging or pairing. The 90Hz display is the other reason this ranks where it does. This is the budget tablet to buy when the update record matters. It runs full Android with the Google Play Store, which means every app a phone has, on an 11-inch screen. Samsung has also put a 90Hz panel in it, which at this price is unusual and makes everyday scrolling feel better than the specification sheet suggests. The A-series is Samsung's budget line, so performance is modest and the build is plastic, but the fundamentals are sound and Samsung's update record on the A-series is better than most budget Android tablets. The Idea Tab is here for what's in the box. Lenovo includes its Tab Pen, so you can write notes, fill in a crossword or sign a form without buying anything else. The screen is the other reason. It's 11 inches at 2560 x 1600, per the listing, which is sharper than the Full HD panels most tablets at this end of the list use. The listing doesn't give a refresh rate. Inside is a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 with 4GB of memory and 128GB of storage, and the listing says it takes a memory card. That chip is fine for video, browsing and notes. The Redmi Pad 2 is the budget tablet with the screen to beat. It has an 11-inch 2.5K screen at 90Hz, a 9,000mAh battery and a microSD slot that takes cards up to 2TB, per the listing. How to choose a tablet in the UK

Decide the operating system before anything else

This is the decision that determines whether you are happy in two years, and no specification compensates for getting it wrong. iPadOS has the largest library of apps designed for a tablet rather than stretched from a phone. Android gives you Google's services, expandable storage and lower prices. Fire OS is Amazon's own and is excellent for reading, video and shopping, but has no Google Play Store.

Fire tablets have no Google Play Store

Amazon's Fire tablets use the Amazon Appstore. Gmail, Google Maps, Chrome and a number of banking and streaming apps have no official version. Sideloading is possible but unsupported and can break with updates. If a Fire tablet is going to be used mainly for books, video, browsing and shopping, none of this matters. If someone expects it to work like a phone, it will disappoint them.

Buy storage you cannot add later

Android and Fire tablets usually take a microSD card, so base storage is less critical. iPads do not: what you buy is what you have, permanently, and moving up a tier later means buying a new tablet. If you keep films or large photo libraries on the device, spend the difference at purchase.

A stylus is only worth it if it is included

Handwriting and drawing transform what a tablet is for, but styluses are expensive bought separately and are easy to lose. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Lite on this list ships with its S Pen in the box, which is worth more than the specification gap to tablets that do not.

Kids' tablets are a warranty, not a specification

Can Amazon Fire tablets use Google Play?+

Not officially. Fire tablets run Fire OS and use Amazon's own Appstore, which does not include Gmail, Google Maps or Chrome, and is missing a number of banking and streaming apps. It is possible to sideload the Play Store, but it is unsupported, can break with a system update, and is not something to rely on. No Fire tablet is ranked here at the moment, because Amazon UK had no new-unit listing with a buy box when this page was last checked. iPad or Android tablet?+

For an iPad there is no card slot, so the storage bought is permanent. 128GB is comfortable unless you keep large photo libraries or download films, in which case move up at purchase because it cannot be changed later.

Are Kids editions worth the extra money?+

For a child under about twelve, often yes, but understand what you are paying for. The hardware is identical to the standard tablet; the premium buys a protective case, a year of ad-free content and a replacement guarantee that covers accidental damage. Compare the Kids price against the standard model and decide whether the case and the guarantee are worth the difference: for a young child they usually are, for a teenager they are not. No Kids edition is ranked here at the moment: Amazon's Kids tablets had no stock when this page was last checked.

Why is the same tablet listed several times on Amazon at different prices?+

Because Amazon creates separate listings for each storage size and colour, and pools the review count across all of them. The iPad 11-inch appears six times on Amazon UK, every one showing the same review total. The differing prices are genuine (different capacities and finishes), but the review count tells you about the model, not that particular listing. Always check which configuration a listing is actually selling before ordering.
