The British phone-buying problem

Most UK handsets are bought on a 24-month contract from EE, O2, Vodafone or Three, with the cost of the phone folded into a monthly bill. It looks cheaper than paying outright, and usually it is not.

Buying SIM-free means paying for the handset once and then choosing a SIM-only tariff separately. UK SIM-only deals are fiercely competitive, and over two years the total is frequently lower — often substantially. You also get no network lock, no carrier software added to the phone, and the freedom to change network the moment a better tariff appears.

The trade is the money up front. That is the whole of the argument.

Do the two-year sum before anything else

Take the contract you are considering and multiply the monthly cost by 24. Then take the SIM-free price of the same handset and add 24 months of a SIM-only tariff with the data you actually use.

Compare those two numbers. That is the real comparison, and it is the one the monthly figure is designed to obscure. Also check whether the contract's monthly cost rises mid-term, which many UK contracts do.

Software support is the specification that matters

A phone stops being safe to use when it stops receiving security updates, not when it starts feeling slow. Apple supports its handsets for longer than any Android maker has yet demonstrated in practice, and Google and Samsung now publish long commitments on their flagship lines.

Budget handsets from every maker get considerably less. Check the stated support period before buying — it is the real measure of how long the phone will last, and it is rarely the headline.

Megapixels tell you almost nothing

Phone camera quality comes from sensor size, lens quality and the processing applied afterwards. Google's Pixel phones consistently produce excellent photographs from modest hardware because the processing is exceptional. Budget phones advertising very high megapixel counts are usually using small sensors with heavy processing, which shows as soon as the light drops.

Seven phones worth considering

The Apple iPhone 16 has the longest software support here and the most consistent camera across stills and video — not always the best single photograph, but the least likely to produce a bad one. The iPhone 15 is a generation behind with several years of support remaining, and carries roughly six times the owner record of anything else on our list.

The iPhone 16e puts the current A18 chip and Apple's full support runway in a cheaper handset, with a single rear camera and no ultra-wide lens — a real limitation for landscapes and group shots.

On Android, the Samsung Galaxy S25 is the best-value flagship: 256GB as standard where the iPhone starts at 128, for meaningfully less, with the best display in the Android market. The Google Pixel 10 Pro has the strongest camera processing here and a telephoto lens, and the standard Pixel 10 runs the same processing on a simpler array for less.

At the budget end, the Samsung Galaxy A17 offers a large screen, dual-SIM and 128GB for a fraction of the prices above — with 4GB of memory and a shorter support runway.

Storage cannot be added to any of these

None of these phones has a microSD slot. The storage you buy is permanent, and photographs and video fill a handset faster than most people expect. If you are between two capacities and intend to keep the phone for several years, take the larger one — the alternative later is paying monthly for cloud storage indefinitely.

No charger in the box

Apple, Samsung and Google all ship their phones with a cable only. If you do not already own a suitable USB-C charger, factor one in, and check the wattage the phone supports — an underpowered adapter will charge it slowly. It does not have to be the manufacturer's own.

Check the listing is the capacity you think

Amazon creates a separate listing for every colour and storage size and pools the review count across them. The Galaxy S25 appears under several listings all showing the same total, as does the iPhone 16. The prices differ genuinely; the review figure describes the model. Confirm which capacity you are buying before ordering, because it cannot be changed afterwards.
